After World War I

The catastrophe of World War I led to collapse in Bavaria too. The
proclamation of a "Free State of Bavaria" on November 7, 1918 by
Kurt Eisner and his followers brought the monarchy to an end.

On January 12, 1919 a democratic state parliament was elected.
Following the murder of Minister-President Kurt Eisner on February
21, 1919 a Bolshevik Republic was proclaimed, but its advocates were
then crushed by imperial army troops. In the years that followed,
Bavaria became a focus of right-wing radical movements, and these
culminated in the abortive putsch attempt by Adolf Hitler on
			November 8, 1923.
